Describe your health problem in your own words. Ask the person deciding treatment to look into it before choosing a medicine.

### Choosing from a medicine list

The Federation of State Medical Boards explains that a patient’s choice from a medicine list does not justify a prescription by itself, in advice checked September 26, 2026. The person prescribing still needs enough information to decide on treatment. This is advice to state boards; the rules doctors must follow depend on the state. A health check means asking about your symptoms, health history, and medicines, with an examination or tests if needed. It starts with your problem, even if a medicine caught your eye first.

## Prepare the visit note

- Write down the concern and what you hope to change. 

- Bring the names of the medicines and supplements you take. 

- Note past reactions and earlier treatment. Add pregnancy questions only if they apply to you. 

- Keep any test results you want the person deciding treatment to review. 

- Ask which extra records would help the health check. 

## If more information is needed

Medical-board advice checked September 17, 2026 calls for the prescriber to arrange any needed test or examination, either directly or through a referral to someone able to perform it. Ask what each proposed test is meant to answer. Also ask who orders it, where it happens, and how the result reaches you.
