# Read the approval claim closely

The FDA is the Food and Drug Administration, the federal drug regulator. Ask what an approval claim refers to: the exact drug or something else.

## Drug approval versus registration

### Approval of the drug

Ask for the exact medicine name and the FDA-approved prescribing information, the official document for that medicine. Ask the prescriber to show where it describes the use being proposed.

### Registration of a business

As of September 26, 2026, putting a business or drug on an official list does not prove FDA approval or permission to sell the product. [Federal rule · Registration and listing ↗ ](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/section-207.77)

Ask: “Is this exact medicine FDA-approved, or are you describing the business?” A business record does not answer the medicine question.

## Test the words in the offer

- Which exact product is the claim about?

- Is the ready-made medicine approved, or is this medicine made to order?

- What record supports the claim?

- Does this number identify the business or prove approval of the medicine?

## Claims that need a correction

A compounded (made-to-order) product cannot truthfully be called FDA-approved, under FDA guidance checked September 26, 2026. [FDA · Compounding claims ↗ ](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/fda-telehealth-companies-what-know-when-promoting-compounded-drugs)

The National Drug Code (NDC) is a code used to identify a drug product in a government directory. It may be shown as a number in an offer or product listing. As of September 26, 2026, the code alone does not prove FDA approval. [FDA · Drug code directory ↗ ](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-approvals-and-databases/national-drug-code-directory)

According to FDA, federal law does not allow retatrutide and cagrilintide to be compounded, as of September 26, 2026. [FDA · Investigational weight drugs ↗ ](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-alerts-and-statements/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss)

At that dated check, they are not ingredients in FDA-approved drugs, and they have not been found to be safe and effective for any condition. [FDA · Approval limits ↗ ](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-alerts-and-statements/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss)

## Keep this answer

Keep the product record. A badge or code leaves the approval question open.
