# Ask why a medicine is made to order

Compounding means a pharmacy or doctor prepares a medicine rather than using a ready-made product. Ask which need the altered medicine is intended to address.

## A patient need versus a cheaper headline

### The patient need

FDA (Food and Drug Administration) says a compounded medicine may serve a need that an approved product cannot address, as of September 26, 2026. [FDA · When compounding may fit ↗ ](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/compounding-and-fda-questions-and-answers)

### The price headline

Ask for the medical reason as well as the price. Request the exact ingredient and the pharmacy name.

A price comparison leaves the reason for the compounded product unanswered.

## Make the reason specific

- What need is the made-to-order product meant to meet?

- What approved product was considered?

- What change is being made, and why does it matter for me?

- Which pharmacy prepares it?

- What label and written information will come with it?

## The limits beside the question

Compounding can be lawful when its state and federal conditions are met, as of September 26, 2026. [FDA · Compounding and the law ↗ ](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/compounding-and-fda-questions-and-answers)

As of September 26, 2026, ordinary pharmacies face legal limits on regularly making medicines that are almost the same as ready-made products already sold. One exception covers a change to the medicine that the prescriber judges makes an important difference for a particular named patient. A lower price alone does not meet that exception. An allergy to a dye used in a ready-made product can be a reason to prepare a medicine to order for that patient. [FDA · Why a change may be needed ↗ ](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/compounding-and-fda-questions-and-answers)

As of October 6, 2026, Arizona requires the place making the medicine to have a Pharmacy Board permit. The medicine must also meet state and federal compounding rules. The permit alone does not make every ingredient or product lawful. [Arizona · Current compounding rule ↗ ](https://apps.azsos.gov/public_services/register/2026/30/contents.pdf)

Ask the pharmacist which rules allow this ingredient and this medicine to be made for you.

## Keep this answer

Keep the reason this medicine is being made for you beside its name. Ask again if the answer is only about cost.
